What happens when God calls ordinary, imperfect people to be part of something far bigger than themselves?
In this sermon, we explore Acts 1:12–26 and the beginning of the early church. Faced with the betrayal of Judas, the departure of Jesus, and the enormous commission to make disciples of all nations, the disciples had every reason to feel inadequate. Yet God's purposes were never dependent on their perfection.
Through the appointment of Matthias and the disciples' response to Jesus' commission, we discover a powerful reminder: God continues to fulfil His purposes despite human failure, and He invites us to participate in His plans for the world.
In this sermon, we explore three key truths:
1) God's purposes survive human failure: Our weaknesses and mistakes cannot defeat God's plans.
2) God's purposes are bigger than the people carrying them: We are called to bear witness to Jesus' life, death, and resurrection and to share the good news with all nations.
3) God's purposes require dependent participation: Dependence isn't doing nothing. It's doing everything God asks while knowing that only He can accomplish what He has promised. We are called to pray, obey Scripture, exercise wisdom, take action, and trust God with the outcome.
Whether you feel inadequate, uncertain about the future, or overwhelmed by what God might be calling you to do, this sermon is an invitation to trust Him afresh.
